Taxi (Cab)

Take a taxi from the airport. Tell the driver: "zu den Forschungsinstituten in Garching beim Forschungsreaktor" (=to research institutes in Garching near FRM II). When you see the egg-shaped reactor building, tell him to go on straight and then turn right (see map). The WSI is the second building.

Cost: approx. 40 € from main train station, 35 € from airport.

Subway

Munich has two types of subways, U-Bahn and S-Bahn.

Main station:
Look out for entrances to the "S-Bahn" that are marked by a big green "S".

a) Buy a ticket called "Streifenkarte" (=ticket with 10 strips, it costs approx. 10.50 €) at a ticket machine (accepts bills and change). You need to stamp four strips at a ticket validation machine located just before the stairways to the S-Bahn. This ticket is good till you reach your final destination, subway U6 "Garching Forschungszentrum". Cost: approx. 4 strips = 4.20 € (one-way)

b) Alternatively by a ticket "München XXL" (valid from "ring 1" to "ring 8", Garching Forschungszentrum is "ring 7"). This ticket is valid the whole day for all transportation between the city of Munich and "Garching Forschungszentrum". Cost: approx. 6.50 €

Ride ANY of the S-Bahn trains in direction "Marienplatz" and exit at the second stop "Marienplatz". There, follow the signs to "U-Bahn" (big blue "U"). Take the U6 to "Garching Forschungszentrum" which is the final stop. Walk to WSI (5 min).

Munich airport:

a) 8 strips of the Streifenkarte, approx. 8.40 €
Take any of the S-Bahn to "Marienplatz" and change to subway (U-Bahn) U6 into the direction "Garching Forschungszentrum" which is the final stop. Walk to WSI (5 min).

b) 6 strips of the Streifenkarte, approx. 6.30 €
Look out for the entrance to the "S-Bahn" that is marked by a big green "S". It is located just beneath the central check-in area between hall B and C of the airport. Buy a ticket called "Streifenkarte" (=ticket with 10 strips) at a ticket machine (accepts bills and change). You need to stamp 6 strips at a ticket validation machine located near the stairways to the S-Bahn and on the platform. This ticket is good till you reach your final destination, "Garching Forschungszentrum". Take the S-Bahn to Ismaning and change to bus 230 to "Garching Forschungszentrum". This bus only runs Monday through Friday.
